The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a film directed by David Fincher and has been released on 23rd of December. This dramatic film with action and a hint of thriller is estimated to make £8,000,00 in box office. A film about a journalist-investigator and a precious computer hacker becoming involved in life threatening mysteries. David Fincher also directed the film Panic Room, which is listed mostly as a thriller movie, nevertheless you can get a sense of drama as the daughter in the 'panic room' has diabetes and they are prisoned in their own house. When dramatic films like 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' have action and thriller they tend to get more of a male audience, for instance the percentage of the audience to be male will be 56%. however, the male audience beat the female audience by a tiny amount as the percentage of female audience is 44%. Comparing the gender audience to 'Panic Room', the male audience is increased slightly by 60% and the female audience is 40%. Panic Room was a very re-memorable and successful film, it won one award and got nominated 8 times and it is very clear that 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' will be thrice as much successful. With the director being known for his precise filming, from getting quick shots of typing on a keyboard and making sure that every little prop is in the the scene to make it create the right atmosphere.

HORROR! OR DRAMA!

After looking at various openings, we found that we were more drawn to the drama genre. As thrilling as it was to go for the horror genre, we decided it was more clever to do a genre that we could be most successful at and that was indeed Drama!. We looked at and enjoyed watching more drama based films and the mix of narratives really grabbed our attention and also instantly giving us ideas for a narrative that we could use. However, we did find films that shared other genres with the genre Drama, nevertheless we did find films with only the genre Drama and ones that where memorable also. For instance, Seven pounds, My week with Marilyn, The art of getting by and there are upcoming films that seem to be great on narrative, like J.Edgar and so on.
As there can be many ways to open a film successfully, in any of the genres, drama has a nice way of giving away the story but still get the audience still wanting to know more. The audience want to know what will happen with the character and their journey. You can do all of this and still do it in the most creative way. Even though, there are many epic openings, we had to think realisticly and think on whether we can get good enough actors and a great setting. Overall, drama won in our opinions

The Secret Garden Part 1/11

The genre of this film is drama; The opening begins with soft/calming music of a flute playing.
We able to see the setting from the opening, it is clear that they live in a hot country somewhere in Asia because we are shown a long shot of a house surrounded by heaps of sand.
In the opening we see close up shots of a girl being dressed, this may suggest that she is someone important.
We also see that her parents are always going out and leaving the girl, this shows the audience that she is neglected by her parents.
The audience is also shown a close up shot of the girls face staring at her parents, from her facial expressions we are able to see that she is angry.
The opening clearly tells us that the girl is the main character as there is a voice over explaining her life and how she feels about it.

We are able to establish that this film is a drama because straight away we are shown that there is an earthquake.
This is very effective because it gives the audience a sense of tension and makes them want to find out what will happen to the girl.
When the earthquake hits, the girl is hiding under the bed.
The audience can see that something is wrong when everything begins to shake and fall around the girl, this is dramatic and thrills the audience.

I think that the opening of this film is very effective as something big an interesting happens straight away, which will make the audience think that the rest of the film will be interesting.
Starting the film off with a earthquake clearly proves that it is a drama.
That fact that we are shown that the girl is orphaned will leave the audience feeling sorry for the girl, and make them want to know what will happen next?

The Others Opening // Intro

The opening scene in The Others start off with a low angle shot of a dark gloomy staircase, slowly panning up near to the top of the staircase as the background gets darker an darker till it turns pitch black. Watching this makes the audience feel as if they are walking up the stairs and as it gets darker, it creates a sense of suspense and mystery.
We then move up to a close up shot showing an old drawing of an old women sitting on a chair. This is creepy and may symbolise old age and death. Death may be a clue to what the film is about.

Later we see a woman's hand showing she is locking a door with a key, this creates a sense of thrill for the audience as they will want to know whats behind the door.
Also it creates suspense and excites the audience. The audience are shown three other characters through the drawings. We see a girl, a boy and a women who may be their mother.
This tells us that this Gothic horror may be about a family. We see the boy in his bed looking frightened. This suggests that he has seen something that has scared him.

The opening scene ends with a long shot of a drawing showing us a old misty mansion. We then are shown the mansion as it really is and not as a drawing.
The scene ends showing this big house and this may suggest that this is the setting of were this horror film takes place.

Researching the DRAMA genre.

My sister's keeper...

The genre of this film is Drama; a film about a girl who was created in order to help her older sister, who has cancer. It all stops when she decides to take her parents to court and not giving them permission to use her bone marrow or any other parts, to help her sister, albeit it would help her. However, she only does this because her sister asked her to refuse to help so she can die peacefully. Then the story is about her families’ journey during this process and how they learn more about each other.

The opening establishes:
  • The characters- it is clear that this story will be based about a household but mostly about this girl her sister and their parents.
  • Music/sound or dialogue- In the opening we can instantly here soft, calming music in the background and then we here dialogue. A little girl, who we believe is the main character as she talks about her life.
In the opening the dialogue is used to give a brief understanding about the film and what type of character is, by her speech.
  •          The setting- we know it will be based at home and after the 2 minutes end we see a school bus so we know it’s set in a neighbourhood.

I think this is an interesting way to open a film, because we establish that this film is about this girl who was "engineered" to help her sister, by a voice over of the main character. However, knowing this definitely raises questions because we want to know what’s wrong with her sister if she needs help. Also, the various shots are being flicked off the screen, as if reading a book. Whenever the girl was saying something the shot linked to her words, from when she was speaking about how a child is created and her family.  Overall, the opening of this film had everything you need; it introduced you to the basic characters in this film, with the flashes of home videos we knew that it will be based on a family: mother, father and two girls. We get music and even dialogue, in the same time giving us an understanding of the narrative and the genre of the film; What the story was based around and the music did give a calming atmosphere, but it added to the sympathetic feeling we felt towards the girl. It introduced the genre as drama again because we know that there must be something tragic with the sister in order for the parents to 'create' another baby. Nevertheless, it establishes equilibrium because we don’t know what the real problem is, which raises questions as to what the real problem is?
